    I think it is common for a teacher changing from special education to regular education to get more special education students. I felt that was my experience when I switched. I let the counselor know(she did student placements before the year started) after the first year started that I had twice as many IEP's as the any other 5th grade teacher. The next year was better, and by the third year, we were all fairly even.
    To some extent, it is flattering when someone tells you that you do well with special needs kids, but you must draw the line in the sand, and as another person posted, look at the numbers of IEP's in each class. Don't accept someone telling you,"Oh, but you do so well with these kids." If you get this comment, reply, "No, I have too many to do a good job, and it is taking its toll on me." Let them know the workload this creates!
    Doesn't your school weight the students somehow...meaning special needs kids are equivalent to 1.5 or 2 regular ed. kids? This needs to be looked into. Perhaps you could give a hypothetical situation to your collegues: There are four 5th grade classrooms, all with 26 kids. 2 IEP's in class A, 3 in class B, 5 in class C, and 9 in class D. When should we stop looking at 'numbers,' and start looking at 'needs' of students. Post again so we can hear what happened. Good luck.
