    I don't know how well this will work with second graders, but my third graders did okay... I set up a couple of reading centers and math centers in the room, (if you don't have a great deal of room, put the activities in a manilla envelope and paste the directions on the outsides) Try and spend one afternoon going over the directions for the centers and the activities and give the children a chance to use each of the activities... Play around with the centers and see what works for you, perhaps when some of the children finish there seatwork, they can go to a center and choose an activity to do by themselves,or While you are working with one group the other children may work on activities from certain centers they are assigned to...i know it will create more work in the beginning, but overall I found them to be extremely helpful...Good Luck!
