Try working off the positives & yes you can find one
By Jill

Clip to ScrapBook
Instead of focusing on what the student can't do try focusing on what the student can do. Give an incentive to the student for returning the books. Partner the child with a student that can do the work and maybe he will
try. Maybe the child needs a little more positive than all the I can'ts. My classroom of 15 years in South Florida is full of I can'ts. Their parents are just so happy their in America and their child is going to school that nothing else on the planet matters. It really bothers me that we as teachers just throw in the towel on students. In the end the ones that you think don't appreciate
you do and the one's you think will just adore you go on.
Also, have you thought about the parent and their educational career. Maybe they had a bad experience in school and they see school as a negative experience. If every teacher comes off the way you have her experience is just continuing. My last thought is this even a parent with a challenging child behaviorally and academically like to hear the positives too. Try starting there.
