I am also a first year teacher and have found it hard to stick to the consequences. BUT, I have gotten tough. I take away recess time away - they have to sit outside with no one around to talk to them. I have also assigned reports for more serious consequences- so far this has worked for me! If at the end of the month no missed recess or reports- reward with movie and a treat- that is always a winner.
