I teach 4th grade and require cursive on anything that will be graded. Students do not have to use cursive in their spiral notebooks where they take notes, their journals (practicing writing), rough drafts, etc. When they
ask if they have to use cursive I tell them (with a smile) "I only read cursive!" After the first month, most of them use it automatically and their writing has gotten so much better! I laminated nametags for their desks out of construction paper with the upper and lower case cursive strips at the top and bottom - their name is written inbetween, in cursive, of course! (There's also plenty
of room for "reward stickers.") The refer to the strips when letters give them difficulty and also for help with alphabetizing. You can also buy nametags with the alphabet (Really Good Stuff for Teachers has them). Hang it there - for most students it does get easier!
