I am a 3rd grade teacher and need to start having my class work in cursive as well. Like you said, this project won't solve the original poster's problem, but it IS a lot of fun! When I was in 4th grade, our student teacher did it with us, and I still remember it to this day!

One other thing that might be fun is to have the kids "write the room." (like they do in 1st grade) I have most of the furniture in my room labeled in cursive so they can practice reading it-- to "write the room," children would walk around and copy the print that they see. My class enjoys this much more than mindlessly copying over poems and sentences!
