Recess is gone
By Brenda

Clip to ScrapBook
Each time my 4th graders would get too loud or begin to get out of control, I would write the word recess on the board as a written warning. If the bad behavior continued, I would erase one letter of the word, and 3 minutes of their recess would also disappear. If the entire word disappeared then their recess would too. I also made it possible to earn back minutes by adding letters back with good behavior. I always made sure it was exceptional behavior to earn back valuable letters. It worked most of the time. Hope it helps someone else. (If we lost all recess time, I always made sure time was given for a restroom break. Ususally while we completed an assignment silently.)
