Passed the Excet!!
By JulieP

Clip to ScrapBook
Well, here is what happened to me. The teacher next to me took the test three times and failed it, all three times. Since we were both from Oklahoma, and took the same certification test there, I got scared and thought that
I too would fail. I didn't take the test, and quit teaching.

Well, a couple of years later, I got mad enough at myself for quitting that I decided to take the test just to prove that I could pass it. Well, I did with a 92 on Professional and an 88 an elem comp. This is how I did it:

1. Went to my local library and checked out a study guide. Then I made several copies of the tests.

I took the test, then looked back at my wrong answers. Those questions that I got wrong, I wrote on index cards, with the answer written on the back, and a brief description of why that was the correct answer. I would study my index cards as often as I could, and then in a couple of days, I would retake the test, and repeat the procedure.

2. I went and bought a program at the college book store that included a video, and some flash cards. Excet Master, I think. I gave up on the video, but used the flascards, and the system to go along with them.

3. I got the book Pass the Excet on Your First Try. There are several worksheets in there. I made several copies of them and fileld them out over and over again. Then I posted the completed ones everywhere. On the bathroom mirror, on the back of doors, the refrigerator, and place that I knew I would spend time. Then I would glance at them.

The thing to I learned, and had to get use to is this: The wording of the questions can somtimes seem backwards as far as your answer choices. I just memorized the question formats instead of just the answers, and kept repeating my work until I was taking the practice test under time and at 100% accuracy.

I do believe that if I had tried to take the test while teaching, I too would have failed. It is definitely something that you need to be able to devote several hours a week to studying. If you don't have several hours at a time to study, the flash cards are great, then. You can carry them with you anywhere, and when you have a free five minutes, you can review some of them.

Feel free, either one of you, to email me, if you need any encouragement or help.
