Consistency, consistency, consistency!!! If you have rules in place, apply the rules 100% of time. I have had a few student teachers who were great, but they didn't want to be "mean."
Explain the rules that there is
no talking, then when someone talks, tell them to put their head down.
Make sure you demonstrate how a head is put down, or else you will have peeking, etc. I just have the kids owe 3 minutes at recess with their heads down. I have a very happy group, and we get a lot done, but if they are talking out, an automatic 3 minutes. No emotion from me, neither positive or negative...it's
just the way it is.
I find I get frustrated every now and then because of kids who are talking out. I catch myself and realize that I am allowing it without applying a consequence. Once I say "Oops, 3 minutes" to the talker, everyone is mum. Don't relax on this issue of talking if it is the misbehavior you want to deal with. But know in your heart that you WILL APPLY the consequence. I find recess means a lot more that 3 minutes during class time, but either works for me.
