sleepapathy (no sleep + apathy in school)
By 3rd teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach third grade. I have about four students who regularly don't complete or hand in work. I have investigated and discovered a few reasons for some of the apathy.

Student A: Regulary sleepy, sleeps in class. He has
a language disorder. Parents do not come to m-team meetings. When he is able to focus on his work, he does a good job. He does not do any work or return any work that he has to do at home. I suspect that he is kept up too late at night. Doing what? I don't know.

Student B: Extremely bright. Never at school because "I can't get ready in time." Mother apparently tells him this. They have

been turned over to social services.

Student C: Girl who comes into class and lays her head down and goes to sleep. Constently sleepy. Never completes homework at home.

Student D: Another girl. Absent once or twice ever other week. Sweet girl, but totally clueless and doesn't associate her school work with grades. Mother said she has trouble with math. She counts on her fingers to add. Does not work out problems. Has yet to memorize math facts. Her mother has expressed concern, but continues to keep her at home frequently.

Studnet E: bright but so laid back that he could not care less about work, much less turning it in. The parents are so concerned they have taken him to a doctor. Father works two jobs and comes in late at night often after ten.

I think if parents don't value school work, the students don't. But, many just have other, more urgent problems in their lives at this time. Also, if students have an upheavel in their life, they can't focus on mundane tasks. Finally, I think lack of sleep is a major issue with these children. I frequently have students telling me they were up till 11:00, 2:00, etc. Some are waiting for a parent to come in from work. Also, I have seen some students out at Wal-Mart past 10:00 on a school night.

I would investigate sleep hours and school performance. It would be nice to be able to rule out that one variable and study apathy about school. Of course, if parents don't care that much about school and education, keeping little Johnny up till mid-night isn't going to concern them either.
