adapting homework
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with you that a child who is always being punished for not doing homework isn't learning much. For your regular students it makes sense to reward those who bring the homework back, and remind the PARENTS of the kids
that don't. It's been my experience that parents will make sure kids do the work if you remind them often enough. As to your special needs child, of course homework should be adapted to her needs! I've run into the same trouble with a couple of kids. I found material at a reasonable level for the child and sent that home. The one child who needed special homework assignments was
also ESL and her parents spoke no English. So we found some very simple worksheets in Spanish that we could send home. I tried to match the subject matter to what we were studying in class even though it was at a lower level. It gave the child a successful experience. You might also ask your special ed teacher if she has anything you could use as homework for this child.
