Right on! By Leigh

I teach third grade, and even with eight year olds, occasionally a discipline problem will arise. I, too, have quit writing referrals. It does no good. The kid comes back into the classroom smiling victoriously. It seems| like the administrators are straddling the fence; trying to keep parents, students, and teachers happy at the same time (well, maybe not the teachers). As elementary teachers in my district, they don't like for us to make them write. They don't like for us to "embarrass" a child. Recess usually ends up being less than 10 minutes, and the kids eventually figure out sitting out for | | 10 minutes is not that bad. We sure can't paddle (paddling comes in pill form in many cases). At one faculty meeting, my assistant principal used the analogy of a state trooper. She said for us to stay in close proximity of our students, just as drivers stay in line when a state trooper is near us. Well, duh (for lack of a better word), if state troopers weren't allowed to write tickets, or weren't allowed to speak harshly to us, or weren't allowed to embarrass us by using the blue light....I would drive like a complete maniac whether they were near me or not. I'd probably even pop a wheelie or something else crazy. All misbehavior must result in consequences (Common Sense 101). Wouldn't it be grand if teachers could run the country?
