Dead slow and stop By Grace

Sorry folks, but there always seems to be one really slow one in the class. I have two this year, one who is ADHD and is on Ritalin. I have to try to counteract his medication. It slows him down and I have to try to speed| him up again. The other one is the more frustrating variety- laid back to the point of being horizontal. My fingers itch sometimes when I want to give him a shake and yell HURRY UP! Well, just before Christmas I decided to give the ADHD kid a little chart as part of his IEP. I made it on the computer. It lasted for two weeks. Every day he got a piece of work done I put a smiley face sticker | | beside the name of the day. At the top of that section it said I finished my work today. If the work was not finished I drew in a sad face and wrote a little comment like No work finished today. Oh Dear. At the end of the two weeks the child only had one sad face on his chart and he took it home to show his mum as pleased as could be. To cut a long story short, I thought I would also try it with the other slow boy. He too went home with his chart with only one sad face on it. Well, believe it or not, since Christmas I have not had to speak to this child about getting his work finished. I can hardly believe it myself. Some children like to get work sent home because it means mum or dad may help them to get it out of the way. Good luck everyone and you can always cover those grey hairs! Grace
