Calendar creativity
By Donna

Clip to ScrapBook
During my student teaching in kindergarten, I did the calendar each day with the students. They loved the routine and were never bored. Besides the usual counting and patterning, we drew the weather on a weather graph, dressed Froggy appropriately for the weather, sang the days of the week and discussed changes in seasons. What was original in this classroom's routine, was that each month the children learned the monthly rhyme to Maurice Sendak's Chicken Soup with Rice. It was written and illustrated on chart paper and changed monthly. They learned the poems quickly (usually within the first half of the month)and had lots of fun doing it! It also helped tremendously with sight word recognition. Good luck! Be creative!
