Thanks for the replies to my original post...

Just a few things to add...my principal does know about ALL of this. She is actually the one who told me about the tape recorder thing--not because the mom told her, but because
she told the woman who runs the after-school tutoring program. The mom refuses to speak to either me or the principal. For the conferences I have held, my student's grandmother comes. Grandmother is ok--she's trying her hardest, but has her house absolutely full of all the relatives she's attempting to take care of, including her unstable daughter and her granddaughter. In addition,

she has numerous other grandchildren, nieces, great-grandchildren, etc living with her--all of whom come with their own problems.

I am documenting ALL my contact with this family, and my principal is supportive. Social Services says they cannot get involved because it is technically the grandmother who has custody of the child--never mind that the mother is very much in her life and not a good influence.

I don't know what I'm trying to say here--I guess I just appreciate the chance to vent, even if it isn't a situation that's very easy to change. It's just so frustrating--I feel like my hands are tied in helping this girl and I know my other students in this close-knit class are suffering from her problems, also.
