The lowdown on teaching, IMHO
By Leanne

Clip to ScrapBook
Alycia...I think you'll just have to try it, to see how it fits. From where I sit, the job is just too BUSY. I love the kids, love planning lessons, don't even mind marking, WHEN I'm given a reasonable amount of time to
do it. The problem is that everything in education is done on the cheap. There are not enough teachers, not enough prep periods, not enough resources...which leaves teachers (especially the ones who really care about the job) scrambling to put all the pieces together, usually on their own time and often with their own money. I don't mind the low salary (too much) but I do really resent
the fact that I have spent every night for the last two weeks, both Saturdays and part of both Sundays doing schoolwork while my husband (who earns three times what I do) spent his time at the golf course, enjoying life. That big plastic box of marking I tote home every weekend is beginning to feel AWFULLY heavy, after eight years. Having said that, I do know teachers who give what they feel is reasonable in a given week and then walk away, whether all the marking and planning is done or not. I think you just need to figure out whether you're the kind of person who is comfortable with that. Some are, some aren't.
