HI All
What a hot topic!

I'd like to say that Carson is right on the money as far as the colleges of education offering special education classes to the regular ed teacher. Most offer many classes but only require one
like Carson took. Maybe someday that will change and new teachers will get a class that helps them with modifications on the IEPC. Until then you will all have to rely on your special ed team.

The post by irate says her special ed teacher doesn't help much. I'm willing to bet if irate is so fruatrated that others in that building are equally frustrated. It would be great if the

special ed director held an inservice in this school showing teachers how to modify their subjects to meet the IEP goals. Maybe it wouldn't fix the problem but it sure couldn't hurt. Maybe, Irate, you could channel your anger into arranging such an inservice in your building?

I also agree with the posts that say not all teachers can teach special needs kids. I know that is true in my building and I personally place all my children with teachers who will accomodate my students. I don't want to place them with teachers like Irate who would rather they didn't exist. I don't hold any personal grudges against the teachers who don't/can't. It is true some are not cut out to teach the speical needs because of their personal views....that's human nature. I want my kids to be as successfull as possible.

Now, I do take offense to the statement that special ed teachers feed their students the answers. I suppose some do because it makes their jobs easier. There are good and bad special ed teachers as we well know. I do not do this...I am very demanding of my students. I tell them they have to work twice as hard as other kids and that's just the way it is. I don't let them use their disabilities as an excuse. I am in constant communication with the regular ed teachers. I have a communication sheet I send out each week as well as daily contact through email or in person. I know which kids want to be slackers and keep on them to be successful instead. It saddens me to know that others are not as vidulant with their students.
