What a hot topic! I'd like to say that Carson is right on the money as far as the colleges of education offering special education classes to the regular ed teacher. Most offer many classes but only require one
I also agree with the posts that say not all teachers can teach special needs kids. I know that is true in my building and I personally place all my children with teachers who will accomodate my students. I don't want to place them with teachers like Irate who would rather they didn't exist. I don't hold any personal grudges against the teachers who don't/can't. It is true some are not cut out to teach the speical needs because of their personal views....that's human nature. I want my kids to be as successfull as possible. Now, I do take offense to the statement that special ed teachers feed their students the answers. I suppose some do because it makes their jobs easier. There are good and bad special ed teachers as we well know. I do not do this...I am very demanding of my students. I tell them they have to work twice as hard as other kids and that's just the way it is. I don't let them use their disabilities as an excuse. I am in constant communication with the regular ed teachers. I have a communication sheet I send out each week as well as daily contact through email or in person. I know which kids want to be slackers and keep on them to be successful instead. It saddens me to know that others are not as vidulant with their students.
