Home : 2002 : January : 25
The first year is always hard, not just having to learn the curriculum, planning, etc., but it's all the other little things too, recess duties, fire drills, book orders, field trips, report cards, the list seems endless at times. The best advice I was given when I first started out was to make time for myself. Even in my first year I set aside at least one weeknight and most of the weekend just for me. It's important to have that time to get refreshed and not feel so overwhelmed. Use those experienced teachers and since they say you are doing well - take their word for it and relax. I think one of the highest stresses of those first few years is job security. We want to do our best to ensure we have a job for the following year or a great reference. And trust me even us experienced teachers have our moments. I'm lost right now myself. I was sick the first two weeks back to school, this week (my first back) we've had -40C weather so our busses do not run, thus I've had almost no students. Great for planning, but not great for getting the work done. So right now I feel my kid's have missed most of January (their sub was great, but she was only there for part of the time, other days were filled in with whoever so there was no really continuity to the plans). All we can do is give it our best effort as much as possible and the kids will learn. I may not cover every single detail this year, but I will get the basics covered. Take it one day at a time, enjoy planning for your wedding and before you know it June will have arrived.
