Centers

I work in a school in the Uk and have never heard of centers. I also have problems rotating my reading groups and am looking for any ideas that may help. I generally try to take reading groups when the rest of my class are working on another curricular area, but I find this very difficult to manage. I have seen a lot of people on this site talking about centers but still have no idea what they are. I would be very interested to find out. Please help!!
