I simply tell my kids that we do not use violence in school and we are not going to write about it. Yes some kids complain and I simply say that there are so many themes to choose from that I'm certain they can come up with another topic. As for horror stories you can make them scary with out being violent. We discuss how to sound scary and that often times your imagination will take you to the scary part...I will suggest that they bring in their favorite horror story to let me read what they think is the scariest part....and we discuss what techniques the author used to make it scary and they try to immatate their favorite autor...
