I agree!! I am taking a grad class about this very subject and the above posters are correct. Teach strategies and give the kids more time to read! Have a contest, give rewards, bribe -- do whatever to get them to read more and ON THEIR LEVEL! I know that is difficult, but if you have a lot of struggling readers, let them start with picture books for outside reading. At least they are reading! Read aloud them everyday - discuss the story and have them write their responses in a journal. The book Strategies that Work is excellent and a great resource. Let us know how it goes. P.s. Introduce activities gradually - don't throw everything at them at once.
