Increase time spent reading By E. Lozano
|
|
Too many students do not spend enough time practicing their reading skills throughout the day. The number of minutes students spend reading has a direct correlation to achievement scores. Every day your students should| be going through a guided reading session, an independent reading session, and a session where you are reading to them (read aloud). You may want to pair students up and have them alternate reading to each other. If your reading series has tapes they are a good way to introduce your students to each text. Books on tape are a great asset for your struggling readers. The more fluent your | | stduents are as readers, the more easily they will be able to comprehend. Your reading specialist, a colleague, state standards, the reading book are just some places you can go to find out the skills you should be teaching. Do not just teach reading in your reading block. You should be integrating reading and writing skills into everything you do throughout the day. A lot of your students will feel if they read a story once, they are finished with it. Put an emphasis on quality and quantity in your classroom, and spend larger amounts of time on one story. The more your students interact with a given text, the more comprehension they will take with them.
