one of the best prof. books I've used to teach from and get lesson ideas is STRATEGIES THAT WORK. It is fantastic, easy to read, and has many ideas to use that work. Also, I teach through mini lessons connected to my read aloud. To name a few I would teach prediciting making connections (text to text, text to self, and text to world) summarizing retelling character traits character development 1st and 3rd person author's purpose cause and effect Also, I like to read HATCHET as my first read aloud. First of all this helps boys get interested in reading Gary Paulsen throughout the year. Secondly, we refer back to this "touchstone" text the whole year. Hope this helps a bit.
