school dances
By Janet

Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with you completely and I have let my 6th graders know that girl-boy talk stays out of the classroom (although some of the girls and boys are so obviously flirtatious to each other). What I find exacerbates the attention
is school dances-- here, we as teachers talk about good friendships, etc... and then let them go to school dances which play sexual music (even if it's not outright, it's hinted at in a lot of pop dance music) and encourage them to dance with each other. At my school, the 6th to 8th graders attend dances at Halloween and Valentines Day, and my conscience bothers me every time.

Is it just me, or do we give our kids a mixed message here!?!

As a young teacher, I'd also look for advice on how to bring this message to my class. I've just turned 23, so I find with my age it is somewhat awkward to bring this topic up in the first place.
