Pioneers Moving to Indiana
By Lori 2

Clip to ScrapBook
Scott Russell Sanders wrote a picture book called The Floating House about a family floating down the Ohio to move to Indiana in 1815.

He also wrote A Place Called Freedom about a family of freed slaves from Tennessee
moving to Indiana after the war. It is also a picture book.

Other picture books he wrote about pioneers in that part of the United States are Aurora Means Dawn about a family relocating from Connecticut to Ohio and Warm as Wool also about a family moving from Connecticut to Ohio, I think.

There are several journal style books about the Oregon Trail -- Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie

by Kristiana Gregory, A Dear America Book is one. Another is Westward to Home by Patricia Hermes a My America Book (easier than the Dear America books and this one is from a boy's perspective.) I have more Oregon Trail books, but the conditions were different and that might be too confusing to your students to lump them together. Let me know if you want those titles though. There are also tons of material on the prairie pioneers (Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc)

I really like the Scott Russell Sanders books though and they would fit well with your theme, I think.

Hope that helps and let me know if you want the titles to the other books.

Lori
