I am also a 4th grade teacher, in Kentucky, and the most important piece of advice I can give you it to immerse your students in poetry. Before they can write poetry, they must appreciate poetry. I've spent a great deal of time this year on "Free Verse" poetry, and my students absolutely love it. One activity I do is to have my students keep a Poetry Transcription Notebook. Also, I turn my students into Poetry Detectives and send them in search of new poems for our class to share. If you'd like to know more, please contact me via my e-mail.
