read comp strategy
By Nicole

Clip to ScrapBook
I don't know if this is what you were looking for, but I use a GREAT nonfiction reading strategy w/ my 5th graders called Read Talk Write. First you give them a piece of text that you want them read (example...a short article
about whales). Break it into smaller sections that can each be read in about 3-5 minutes. Pair each child up w/ one other person and make one child "A" and one child "B". Then have EACH child silently read the 1st section. Stop them after a few minutes and have all the A's share everything they remember w/ their partner. After 1 minute or 2 have all the B's share (they may repeat
the same things but using different words.) After 1-2 min have them all write what they read and talked about. Stop them after a few min and have them check their writing with the paragraph. Then, have them read the next section and complete the same steps. THEY LOVE THIS and it forces them to concentrate on what is being read b/c they know they have to talk and write about it. I hope this was helpful! Good Luck!!!
