Hi! i am a 6th grade student and i used to do that to. i might be able to help because that is not how i write anymore. i might do it some times but i now know how to fix it. whenever my class writes in our notebooks then share it we have to go over it and croos out I thinks or that kind of thing it worked for me so it might help for your students.
