I teach 6th, and see this problem at the beginning of the year. "This essay is about..."
"In this essay, you will read about.."

I go over the types of things they are not allowed to write; I remind them not to put themselves or the readers into the writing, unless appropriate. And for the most part, they don't.

You could have them brainstorm, with your help, a list of unacceptable phrases to use in writing and post it.
