state report
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
My students adopted a state last year that they were personally interested in researching. They did Internet research, mostly, although they did use encyclopedias. I gave them a format to work with to guide their research.
I showed them one I had prepared on Florida. My packet included a state flag, a paper with basic information about the state (state bird, state flower, state tree, etc.). They also researched the climate, history, tourism, etc.

I think that you will probably want to start with a writing format, then decide where the kids should go from there. If you want them to write about tourism,

for example, then you could have them write a letter to the state's department of travel and tourism.

Your kids could also write a letter to the governor's office. A response might take awhile, but that would be interesting for the kids. My kids got the first lady's favorite recipe. That was interesting.

There are a lot of possibilities with this assignment.
