I also teach 5th grade - we must have the same text because ours also does a poor job. I use the textbook after introducing fractions through the use of Marilyn Burns activities, Family Math activities, and using color tiles with a book called Geometry and Fractions with Color Tiles. The author is Barbara Bando Irvin. The ISBN is 1-56911-965-5. I ordered it from a catalog - can't remember which one - could be NASCO. It has a lot of hands-on activities which explain the concept of fractions in a concrete way. You can find Marilyn Burns info on her website. I spend a couple of months on fractions.
