i haven't been teaching but a week, but this worked great when i tried it with my fourth graders. i gave them 5 min to come up with 100 words. i said i didn't care what 100 words they came up. no sentences just words. then i had them trade papers and randomly select 15 words.then i had them write a short paper using all 15 words. they worked their proofreading skills, writing, and brainstormed all at the same time. they really enjoyed it too.
