when a child finishes k and is identified as an at risk child we invite them to: Jump Start into 1st grade. We have a 4 week program that is the last 2 weeks of July and 1st 2
We have 2 overflow teachers who work with 2nd and 3rd graders only. She doesn't have her own classroom of kids, she goes into the classroom and offers extra support for kids who need it or she pulls out kids out in small groups for extra support or she also does pre-teaching of the concepts to kids so when they are with the whole group they are having successes in the class. We also have "TEAM" which I'm sure many schools have. You can bring your at risk child to team with all your concerns and the group (made up of special ed teachers, counselors, social workers and speech consultans along with the principal) offer suggestions or alternatives to teaching/reaching that at risk child. Our team meets each Monday. If all suggestions fail the teacher comes back to team and we may at that time do some formal or informal testing to see if the child needs special ed services. I too am looking forward to seeing what other schools do.
