Summaries
By AmyM

Clip to ScrapBook
I have my kids first write independently, all the things they think are important. ( I also have them put stars by each thing) Then I have them narrow it down to just five things. This time Have them discuss in small groups what they feel the 5 most important things are. (Of course, this is all modeled for them beforehand with a different book or selection.) We then discuss as a whole group what should be included in the summary and srudents compare the whole group version to their own. It's still hard for them though. They have such a difficult time picking out what is important! I've found that this is most beneficial in the content areas.
