I never seem to be able to get enought writing in during class so this year I decided to include a writing assignment in my weekly homework packet (5th grade). I started with the paragraph of the week program I found here on ProTeacher and developed it into something that works for me. Our district uses 6 trait writing so I wanted the rubric to follow the traits. I sent a letter home to parents describing the program, and asked for their help. We still have writing time in class but students are now getting more writing in over all. I use the prompts from the paragraph of the week, or from our reading - whatever seems to fit for the week. This has worked well for me and I plan to keep it up when I move to 4th grade next year.
