Asperger's
By DVaughn

Clip to ScrapBook
My son was diagnosed with Asperger's/Autism (he's sort of in the border area where the two overlap). It can be challenging, but one this that is very important is to attend IEP meetings, and develop a good relationship with
the student's special ed teacher{s}. I have opted thus far to have my son in a transitional class (which is where he is in regular ed part of the day and special ed part of the day), and it is working well. One of the main things is trying to get these kids to focus on something besides their current obsession. How we have dealt with this with my son is through behavioral modification.
He is only allowed to talk about his "special topic" (which happens to be movies) during specified times during the day. His regular ed teacher worked with the special ed teacher to develop a cueing system to remind him that he was obsessing, and so far it is working.
