word problems/toy catalog! By j

I don't know if this would be appropriate (you would have to consider the cultural backgrounds of your students and the holiday "dos and don'ts" related to Christmas, but what if you gave each group of students (groups of three or four work well) a toy catalog and a series of teacher-made math word problems related to the prices of the toys? Turn it into a cooperative problem-solving activity in which students fill Christmas wish lists with a predetermined bank roll. Ex. You have $150, how much change will you get back if you buy a GameBoy? They will have to search the catalog (it might help to mark pages ahead of time and put the page number next to the question). Have the groups discuss strategies, solve together, and share.
