I found the book title on amazon.com : HOW BIG IS A FOOT? It is by someone named Myller (I think.). I hope you have time to pick up a copy if that's what you want to use. The people who wrote reviews of the book said they used it in the classroom to introduce non-standard units of measure and the importance of developing and using standard units of measure. I think the into. to measurement should always be non-standard. My students use paper clips, or shoes, etc. Then someone gets the idea to strig some paper clips together and, in essence, they have developed a "ruler." It's lots of fun. I've also always developed a measurment scavenger hunt -- a list of items for students (working in pairs) to get up and go around the room measuring -- How many paper clips (or inches) long is the bulletin board? etc. I've also done it in reverse to help students develop estimation skills -- Find an object in the room that is about 36 paperclips (or inches) long. Good Luck and have fun!!!!!!!
