communication

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi- How about the students write a letter home every week. I had a Newsbook-a composition book -and every Friday studenys would write a letter home about their week. First we would brainstorm all we did(even writing about
specials, lunch, recess) and I would write it on chart paper or on the overhead. Using that chart as a reference, students would write a letter home. It is a great way to beef up communication and have students write in a meaningful way every week. Students have to read the letter to their parents over the weekend and then parents respond on the next page. Students love to share parent
responses. Also-each week I choose a poem/song we have worked on and xerox it-students glue it in their newsbook and illustrate. By the end of the year they have a great memory book and a great collection of poems/songs. I usually have a parent volunteer help during the writing of the letter. I have done this with 1st and third graders and both love it. Parents love it too! I know some 1st graders will not be writing much in the beginning, but by mid year there will be such obvious improvement and they get to see the growth!
