The Sword in the Stone King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table The Wizard of Oz Lord of the Rings Frankenstein Alice in Wonderland Pinochio Jumanji Harry PotterAll of these books are wonderful. | I am Christian and I don't see anything wrong with letting kids READ! I suppose that maybe we should'nt read the Polar Express to kids because some of them don't celebrate Christmas. KIDS DON'T READ! Kids ARE READING Harry Potter. They are well written, very IMAGINATIVE and CREATIVE (which by the way is one of the things we try to teach our students to not loose in their writing | | as they grow older) and are an inch or more thick. When is the last time anyone saw a fourth grader reading a book that thick. All students who are old enough to read Harry Potter (and by older I mean they are able to read up to that level) know that it is just a book. They know they are not going to be able to fly on a broom stick. We need to expose children to Higher Order Thinking Skills and this is a great opportunity to do so. As far as your conference goes I suggest you bring up other books that parents don't have a problem with (like the ones's mentioned above) and ask them how they are any different. Try to reach a compromise such as keeping them in the library but not reading it to your students. Good Luck!
