spelling games By Cathy

Here are a few of my students' favorite spelling games:Bowling- I use 10 one litre soda bottles and a small ball. Line up the bottles on tape on the floor. If the student spells the word right, he or she gets to bowl. | The number of pins knocked over is the number of points earned. Basketball- I use the same ball and a milk crate. I put three tape lines on the floor for the kids to shoot from. If they spell the word right, they take a shot from any of the three lines. The one farthest from the crate is worth 3 points, 2 points for a shot from the middle line and one point from the closest line. Hop | | It Out- I use a shower curtain liner on which I have drawn blocks with the alphabet on. Every other line is a line of vowels. Dictate a word and have the kids hop out the spelling of the word. I also have some blank squares that they can use to hop over to a letter that is far away from where they are. Spelling Baseball- I have a spinner made out of heavy cardboard. It is attached to a long piece of yarn. The front of the spinner is divided like a pizza. On each slice is a word single, double, triple, homer and out. (2 of each) If a student spells a word right, I spin the spinner and he or she has to grab and stop the spinner. Whatever word their thumb lands on is their "hit." Then they run the bases in the room. This is also fun to play outside when it is nice!
Hope you can use some of these ideas. When the kids get really familiar with all of these games, I have spelling centers and set the timer so they spend 10 minutes at each station.
