Read stories that you love. Introduce the stories with enthusiasm. If you are enjoying yourself, the students may get in the spirit. I have been so corny as to kiss the book I am going to read. I tell the class why I like the story. I then give them a reason to look and listen. "What do you think is going to happen to Jenny? Why does the little girl look so sad? Listen carefully to see if you are right!"
I have also taught the students how to "pretend" they are paying attention. If someone does not like the story, that person can pretend to pay attention by sitting quietly, keep eyes toward me or the book. Pretend paying attention looks a lot like real paying attention, but I tell them I won't know if they are really thinking about Christmas or going outside. We know that will happen with 6 year olds.
