Conscious Discipline
By Bette LoPresti

Clip to ScrapBook
I just found this message board and was reading about everyone's frustrations here. I was in pretty much the same boat at the beginning of this year. I teach Pre-K and the kids were doing pretty much the same thing when
I tried to read to them. I was getting pretty frustrated myself. In September I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Becky Bailey speak at an Early Childhood Conference. She advocates using love instead of fear and rewards to discipline children. I have been using many of her positive discipline techniques ever since and my days are going so much better and my children are learning positive
social skills. I heartily recommend visiting her web site www.beckybailey.com and getting one or more of her books. I read "There's Gotta Be a Better Way: Discipline That Works" and am now reading "Conscious Discipline". Both books are wonderful, but "Conscious Discipline" is like a work book and you work on one skill a month until you finish the book. It has wonderful relaxation techniques and is very brain research focused. I feel like a different teacher and it has really helped with the especially challenging child I have in my class this year. Check it out and try some of Becky's ideas. By the way, I ordered "Conscious Discipline" from my local Barnes and Nobles (it took a little bit over a week for them to get it) and I got a 20% educators discount.
