student teacher By Deb

I am a brand new teacher. I just finished my internship in December and now have a class of my own. Two of my friends failed out toward the end because no one jumped in to help. Although you may be younger, you are still| the classroom teacher. The "expert" so to speak. You can help make or break her. If you do not say anything to her then she will think all is well and she will no doubt fail. Does she have a university supervisor? If she is not taking you serious enough than perhaps you need to pull in that resource right away. Have a meeting with all three of you. Communication is the biggest success factor | | at this point. Perhaps pull off some research about learning styles of multiple intelligences. I am not sure what form you use to do observations, but my university used a form with a heart, a light bulb and a question mark. This gives you a chance to make your point about what need to be fixed and say some good things about her. (Heart=what you like, Light bulb= ideas, question mark = open ended questions such as what do you think the children learned? How do you feel about how your lesson was managed?) I know I am new but like I said I just went through my student teaching. Communication is the key. Talk to her about what she is doing right and what she can improve. She may not like everything you say, but at least you did all you could. *Get that supervisor involved. Get him/her to come do an unplanned pop-in and see what she is really like. I hope this helped.
