AR program
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Betsy,
Do you have to do AR? It is sad to see good literature basalized and reduced to a ten question quiz. The reading levels are not nearly accurate enough for what's expected. One of our reading teachers did an
analysis of some books at a supposed 'second grade level' and found that their Fountas/Pinnell guided reading levels varied by as much as three grade levels! It's clear to see when you pull up one of the first grade lists and look at the titles. While the syllable counts are supposedly at GL, the content of the books varies tremendously. I would hate to have my first grader reading
a book he/she would better understand and relate to as a third grader! Reading should be for enjoyment and learning. If that's not happening, maybe something else should take its place, maybe Guided Reading/Literature Conversations??? Best of luck whatever you decide. ;-D
