Writing in 1st
By Kris

Clip to ScrapBook
I find that my first graders are better writers once they learn how to organize their thoughts. I teach the entire writing process to my kids from prewriting to publishing. We use a lot of story mapping/brainstorming techniques
to help get all of our thoughts out and on paper. In addition, I use journals every day and supplemental writing activities to go with the theme we are studying in class(we did reports on farm animals, described a Hershey's kiss using all of our senses, wrote persuasive letters to get volunteers to visit our class, etc).

My principal is really big into writing--the new standards

for our state expect first graders to be writing PARAGRAPHS by the end of the year. I have found that writing also helps tremendously with reading skills. Hope this helps!
