lucky's magic powder
By Joan

Clip to ScrapBook
Every year, I do this with my first graders and they love it! First, before leaving school the evening before, I mess up the room... knock over chairs, mess up student desks, etc. and scrawl a message on the white board
in green marker... "Where's me gold?" When we enter the class in the morning, we really play it up that the leprechaun has ransacked our room in search of his gold (which we "find" later in the day: chocolate coins). But, the best part is Lucky's Magic Powder. I fill a bowl with several packets of instant pistachio pudding powder (enough to mix with 1/2 gallon of milk). I write a letter
on green paper from Lucky with the "recipe" (add milk and whisk and magic will occur). I have our custodian sneakily set the bowl, recipe, milk, little cups, plastic spoons, and a wire whisk outside my door at a specified time then pound very loudly on my door and run! I let a student or two answer the door. They are always baffled when they open the door to no one, just the ingredients. The white powder turns green when they add the milk and the kids are fascinated by the "magic". Most all of them go home with stories about how Lucky visited our class that day.
