Money
By Pam

Clip to ScrapBook
That is a thorn in my side. This year alone that is since last January 2001 - I added up my receipts from last year and I spent over 2,000 dollars OUT OF MY OWN POCKET!!! That is not counting stuff I bought for special
projects (last year we built bird houses - I purchased hammers, nails and used old wood). Well to start I would buy math manipulatives, puzzles, touch math (like the person mentioned above). Thematic units, Big books they cost a lot, I find myself always purchasing books and would probably spend about 2,000 just to have a good library in my room. I change the books in my class weekly
to go along with our theme that I put out for the children and I find myself buying a lot of books that I need and going to the library. My budget is only 467 dollars a year that is for everything!!!! I currently use Wilson reading but would also like to have the Edmark reading series available for those nonphonetic readers and some pre-reading materials. I too teach special ed k-3 and you need a lot of different materials for the different levels. A computer for the children would be nice, a lap top instead of a pc that I never get to because I am so busy during the day would be more practical so I could take the paperwork home to do (IEP's and such). Boy I could spend that money in a flash. I could tell you horror stories of being in positions and only having one book to teach a history class with having out of date math books dated in the 60's and 70's (this was in the early 90's). Teachers editions would be nice to have too. I have copies of touch math - not complete I had to put everything in order and no teacher edition thankfully I have taught it before and am familiar with this, if your professor does have creative ways to get monies please let us know in the real world. Besides buying things and begging I pretty much do it out of my own pocket. This goes to anyone too out there. How do you get the money to just do your everyday things - I do not count those little extra projects like the bird houses as a normal expense, I am talking just materials to teach daily lessons like reading math writing. Sorry to ramble but I am sure everyone has their own story too of supplies.
