The word work component of four blocks doesn't seem to be lacking...My concerns are with the way 'reading' is done. I believe in differentiated instruction based on a continuum of learning, and unless you're doing shared, guided and independent reading on the child's level, you're really stretching to make shifts in time for all. Phonics is only one cueing system which must be used in balance with meaning and structure, so I wouldn't use an 'add on' phonics anything. It's an integral part of the reading/writing day. There are some wonderful professional books written on the teaching of reading, if you'd like titles, just post or email. Or join us on the Teachers As Readers board (a link from the book board will take you there). ;-D
