    Spelling in First Grade

    Hi all,
    I started formal spelling lists after first quarter with my first graders. Most parts of the lists are individualized. I pretested the first 100 high frequency words (which are mainly word wall words) and the kids had their own spelling notebook with perhaps 5 of their own words and 3-5 words from the week's minilesson. Each child has a spelling buddy, paired because they have similar needs. They test each other and work together on spelling tasks-building words with magnetic letters, Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check, or other tactile kinesthetic things like magnadoodle, chalk on the sidewalk, etc. In the front of their notebook is the weekly word list and the back was alphabetized so the notebook would be used as a dictionary during writing.
